Eurist – Who are we
European Institute for Sustainable Transport
The European Institute for Sustainable Transport (EURIST) is an organization dedicated to promoting the ecological, social, and economic sustainability of transport and mobility worldwide. Our work focuses on the relationship between transport and CO2 emission reduction, transport and the Millennium Development Goals, poverty alleviation, environmental protection, road safety and freight transport.
EURIST is based in Hamburg, Germany’s second-largest city and economic hub for northern Europe. We work with an extensive network of national and international partners to achieve our goals.
What we do
As a Centre of Competence for Sustainable Transport we transfer best practice to cities, local and regional governments. We provide project assistance, capacity building, lectures and seminars in different areas in passenger and freight transport.
The Problem
Most cities or regions receiving international assistance to make their transport systems more sustainable are often focused on technological solutions and do not have a holistic long-term policy.
Our Strategy
The Avoid-Shift-Improve strategy aims on a combination of non technological and technological solutions in a tailormade package for a specific geographical, cultural and social context.
The Challenge
Sustainable transport development in urbanized areas is a major global challenge. Promoting e-mobility can address Africa’s mobility issues and improve the climate. Thus, we developed the „African e-bike“ in collaboration with various partners.
Developing and promoting e-mobility is a great oppertunity to tackle the mobility problems in Africa and improve the global climate. To this end we have developed the “African e-bike“ in close cooperation with various partners
Capacity Building
We enhance local stakeholders‘ capabilities by providing training and resources for sustainable transport initiatives. This empowers communities to take ownership of their transport systems, ensuring projects are successful, accepted and maintained over the long term.
Bjarne Mädel
Actor and active support
Our AfricroozE e-bike receives prominent support from actor Bjarne Mädel, known for his role in „Tatortreiniger“ and his film success „25 km/h.“ Bjarne, who lived in Nigeria for a time during his youth, demonstrates his connection to Africa both on stage in the play “Benefiz – Jeder rettet einen Afrikaner” and in his personal life. In April 2019 he visited our e-bike project in Uganda. His impressions are summarized in a short clip that he directed himself.
„What I find most beautiful about it is that it can help make life easier for people in Africa.“ Bjarne Mädel
Our biggest Project
The development of sustainable transport and mobility systems in an increasingly urbanised world will become one of the most challenging global issues of the future. Developing and promoting e-mobility is a great opportunity to tackle the mobility problems in Africa and improve the global climate. To this end we have developed the “AfricroozE e-bike“, our main story of success
JUMO aims to improve German youth’s understanding and awareness of „Sustainable Mobility“ through appropriate teaching materials.
The focus is on developing mobility competence among young people.
Prof. Kurt Bodewig
Minister of Transport
“Especially EURIST´s focus on public transport and the increased use of the bicycle in urban mobility are important to me. Due to my experience as a former Transport Minister I strongly support an increase of safe walking and cycling and the use of public transport.“
